Cricket Quotient — 2

Here's wishing you all a Very Happy Diwali!

First thing first, I must thank you all for a very encouraging response for the quiz. I'd really appreciate if you all give me your feedback on whether the quiz should have the answers at the bottom or should it be published next week, as was done the last time around. As it's a Wednesday, I'm back with the weekly quiz. I hope this one has the necessary degree of difficulty and information to keep you interested. Here it goes...

#1 — He took 4 for 60 in India’s first-ever Test at Lord’s in 1932. Later, his son played Test for Pakistan. Name the father-son duo.

#2 — Ranji, Duleepsinhji and Pataudi (Sr) were the first three players of Indian-origin who played for England and scored a century in their debut Test matches. The fourth player of Indian origin also scored a ton in his debut match for England. Who’s the player?

#3 — He made his Test debut for India at a mighty ripe age of 41 yrs, 27 days, in the 1933-34 Test against England in Bombay. He is considered to be the oldest Indian to make a Test debut. Who is he?

#4 — “He was the most resourceful, violent and unpredictable of the three: Statham was accurate; Tyson was fast: (----) was everything.” Who wrote this line and about whom?

#5 — An uber-quick bowler made his ODI debut last week and his first ball was hit for a six. Name the player.

Answers to the last week quiz…

#1 — Both Test cricket and Wimbledon started in 1877. The first Test was, of course, played between England and Australia on March 15, 1877 at the MCC, Melbourne. On the other hand, Wimbledon started in July, 1877, with the tournament held at the ground situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. Interestingly, the inaugural edition featured only Gentlemen’s Singles.

#2 — The year 1915, one year into the First World War, proved tragic for the game of cricket as it lost two of its greatest players — W.G. Grace of England; Victor Trumper of Australia.

#3 — Syed Md. Hadi had the distinction of scoring Ranji Trophy’s first century. Later, he went on to play Davis Cup for India in 1924 and ’25. He even made it to the doubles quarter finals at Wimbledon in 1926.

#4 — Roger Binny is the first player of Anglo-Indian origin to play Test cricket for India.

#5 — Sunil Gavaskar is the only other player, apart from Don Bradman, to score 20 centuries in his first 50 Test matches.
